Do We Need to Say It Again? Sleeping Less Is Bad for You!

Is modern living becomes more and more demanding, the number of people experiencing sleep-related problems is constantly increasing. It’s almost become the norm to sleep less than 8 hours of sleep daily. The effects of sleeping less are listed below:

Unfortunately, some people have the misconception that less sleep means more available time to get tasks done, hence more efficiency. Most of the time however, the opposite is the case and, due to bad sleeping habits their efficiency drops.

Lack of sleep and sleep disorders are affecting our nation.

Do you know that more than 1.5 million people who live in Australia are suffering from sleep disorders? The most common of these conditions are sleep apnoea, insomnia, and restless leg syndrome.

Sleep apnoea – the condition wherein a person stops breathing on some periods during sleep; it becomes dangerous when such periods become longer, preventing the brain to get sufficient amount of oxygen.

Insomnia – the most prevalent sleeping disorder around the world, it is the condition that is characterised by difficulty in falling or staying asleep.

Restless leg syndrome – an annoying disorder in which the person experiences an uncontrollable urge to move his or her legs; people who have this syndrome feel uncomfortable when their legs stay in one position for long periods.

We are constantly highlighting in our blog articles that being deprived of a good night’s rest is detrimental to your health. As time goes by, you will find it difficult to keep up with your daily duties and routines. So, if you think you may need medical help in addressing your sleep troubles, get it ASAP rather than facing the destructive effects later on.


Effects of Sleeping Less

The immediate effects of insufficient rest are:
• Irritability, impatience, and anxiety
• Uncontrollable daytime sleepiness
• Low concentration on tasks
• Impaired memory

Eventually, you become less productive and are likely to commit mistakes during the day. So don’t listen to anyone who says reducing your resting time allows you to accomplish more? Take a rest – you need it, PERIOD!

Sadly, what we listed above are not the only effects of sleep deprivation. The longer term it could lead to the development of (but not limited to):

• High blood pressure
• Heart ailments
• Impaired immunity and body defence mechanism


Always Have Enough Sleep
